I know this may seem a silly question, but are gutters really necessary? ...!
I'm looking at restoring an old stone property (1500-1800 - not sure yet, it may be different in different parts) that so far has never had guttering.
There's no formal drainage system at the house, so collected rainwater would simlpy have to be fed into the ground.
Am I being stupid in thinking that the advantage of guttering is to allow you to reach your front door without having a torrent of water on your head as you step over the threshold? Or is there an advantage to the buliding itself?
Does all the water falling off the roof round the perimeter of the house do damage?
