Some great events to see and do in the coming months.

‘Sustaining Tradition’ Evening Lecture Series

This prestigious evening lecture series has been devised in association with the Evening Standard’s Homes & Property section as part of the celebrations to mark the 10th Anniversary of The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment.

The UK has woken up to its architectural heritage, its glorious collection of old buildings of different ages. From square Saxon churches or soaring, fan-vaulted Gothic masterpieces to old beamed and pargeted Elizabethan houses and grand landscaped Palladian mansions; from ancient bridges to the most modest of cottages, we are starting to cherish them all — for the skills that made them in such numbers have long since vanished.

The line-up of speakers includes former RIBA president George Ferguson; country homes expert Jeremy Musson; Steven Parissien from the Prince’s Foundation; Philip Venning OBE from SPAB; and Tony Juniper, Director of Friends of the Earth.

At each of these events, at 5.30pm, enjoy a glass of wine before an illustrated talk from the foremost experts in the country. Each talk costs £10. For more information and booking go to www.princes-foundation.org

Since last summer's flooding, the worst since 1947, the SPAB has heard from many enquirers desperate to save their old buildings, not only from the flood waters but also from the destructive advice given by many building insurance companies. It appears from our research that whether a flooded building is new or old the same blanket approach to cleaning up, drying out and reinstatement is used. Unfortunately this approach has meant the loss of important historic fabric and the damaging effect of reinstatement using inappropriate materials. Through the use of case studies combined with sympathetic environmental specialist and conservation professional advice, this course will address the main issues found when dealing with flood damaged old buildings and their repair
