Hi all, I'm desperately looking for some advice with regards repainting our 1925 bungalow exterior. The paint is in a very poor state, cracked and has lifted away from the render in many places, with algae growth behind it.
The render is very solid and well adhered, aside from a few cracks. We had assumed it was cement based render and therefore had planned on removing the loose paint, cleaning, drying it out, then repainting with a standard masonry paint.
However... I now think it might actually be lime render (tested with vinegar today and it fizzed). At least the top coat is, the main coat is much darker and harder - didn't get a definite response either way on the fizz test.. Is this likely to be cement or is it possible it could be lime also?
We have had damp issues in one of the rooms over recent years and are pretty sure it's penetrating damp through the wall. We've left it to dry out over the summer and are keen to get it sealed up before the winter but I'm worried now that if it is lime, we might end up trapping moisture inside the wall.
What should we do?.Do we push on with the plan and just repaint with standard masonry paint? They claim it is 'breathable'.but I assume this is not really the case. Or should we be considering something else? NB the wall is now very patchy, with some bare render, some old cement and filler repairs and some old paint, that is still stuck on. It's taken many hours to get to this stage and I really can't see us removing all of the old paint as it's painfully slow! Not to mention the other 3 sides of the house
Pics attached. The lower render is wet from being washed down btw, it's not usually that dark
Advice greatly appreciated!
