Breakfast bar in cottage kitchen

Afternoon All,

We have a typical cottage kitchen in cream with belfast sink etc. We are looking to get a breakfast bar, I'm struggling to workout the height, our worktop is 92cm high and i'm thinking of getting a 100cm height breakfast bar to have two heights and make it more of a central piece as it will separate the kitchen and dining room.

Images uploaded show layout, kitchen style and breakfast bar style we want. with a big cupboard and drawers on the other side. It will measure 170cm length x 65cm wide. What height would people look to have same as worktop or roughly 10cm higher to create a visual difference and after be standard breakfast bar height?

Typical bar/bb stool height s circa 65cm. To that you need to add at least 15cm for chunky thighs/knees and then the height of the counter top.

yeah but the dilemma is more would the difference in height make it look odd. I don't think it would, but the wife isn't sure. Its detached from the kitchen so can't see if being a problem. I just wanted people views, or what they have is their kitchens

Trouble with that is it's absolutely a thoroughly subjective opinion. Who, in your household, typically, carries the day when such arise? I know who it would be here even if I presented a written statement of support from one of the 'design' deities. Also, I make a practice of discrete silence, as a valorous effort, where others marital relations are concerned.

Whenever I’ve done a breakfast bar it has been the same height as the worktop and I’ve just bought shorter stools…

I think i've got the wife to accept the larger breakfast bar size. I don't think it would look right being worktop height. She is happy with the extra depth on the drawers across the top.

Are you saying the difference in heights will be only 8cm? ( 100 - 92 ) that seems like such a small difference it might look more of a mistake than a deliberate design decision.
Full disclosure I cannot abide a breakfast bar type thing, I have test driven them in various incarnations and when it came to designing our kitchens there was no discussion, no compromise no nothing. There will not be a breakfast bar/ island, there will be a table and chairs.

I won’t invite you round to ours then
That island is the same height as the worktops though

I’m perfectly at ease with them in other people’s houses, like many other things, round carpets, standard lamps, excessive numbers of cushions, baggy knicker curtains…… I could go on. This is obviously to balance out the fact that most normal people would be utterly appalled at having to accommodate a collection of 2,000 elephants and much assorted pachyderm adorned items.

PS That’s a lovely kitchen, although I am concerned by the Borg cube hovering there, I hope you have not been assimilated
