Butchered Front Door

Hello,
So glad I found this forum, it’s been very helpful so far!

We have a grade 2 listed property with a front door that had a piece of plywood over the lower panels.
Yesterday we removed the panel to reveal the lower mouldings, only to find they had been /sawn off butchered.
Can anyone offer advice on how we can repair it please?

My husband seems to think the original mouldings would have been tacked on and we can remove them and buy new?
Either way, we want to strip the door and repair it sensitively

Your other halfs right. Comparable/identical mouldings can easily be purchased to effect those repairs. The things to bear in mind though are that if you intend to retain any of the existing mouldings then you will have to make sure that you get thoroughly accurate measures of ALL the dimensions - even minor differences will jar on the eye. As a consequence you may want to consider removing and replacing ALL the comparable moulding. Another is that great care is needed not to damage the wooden panel upon which the mouldings are mounted while removing the old mouldings. They are quite thin and not hugely strong and can easily split and break up. Don't let your other half get heavy handed with them.
