Hi All,
Looking for a bit of advice on the inside walls of our Welsh Limestone property.
Both the internal and external walls are of thick (3ft) welsh limestone. The former Inn was converted to a house in approx 1990. As far as I can tell, the entirety of the internal surface of the walls was coated in approx 2 inches of cement based plaster (render?)
The current intention is to plaster internally with a lime plaster, based on reading here and elsewhere, in order to allow the walls to breather and to resolve some of the damp issues. (The external walls also need the same treatment, but I'll focus on internal at the moment!)
My question is two fold:
1) How do I get this cement plaster off? In places it is blown and crumbly, in others it is rock solid. In some places (underneath windows) they have plasterboarded over. Would you suggest removing it, or just repairing it? My thought is that ist is the wrong material, and needs to come off.
2) Is it safe to remove this all, given that the walls underneath seem in places to be held together by dirt? How would this normally be approached? Removal and repointing in sections, or remove it all then just plaster over in lime based plaster?
I've attached some pics that may help show the various types.
