Chesterfield sofa recommendations

Hello all

As our lounge is almost complete I would like to finish it off with some Chesterfield style sofas. Has anybody purchased any new that could recommend a manufacturer/supplier? Preferably with a show room that I could go and look, sit, and speak to someone about as it is a large purchase financially and would rather not do it blind.

This is one I have found so far that looks pretty good but I did come across it from an advert in a national newspaper, so how good actually are they...

They go via various website / trade names but all end up at Saxon.

They have a show room in Bolton and make the sofa's in the UK.

We made the road trip to visit and it was well worth it. We were dithering about colours but after talking to them they were able to alter the amount of antiquing to get exactly what we wanted.

They were expensive but still holding up well after 3 years.

We bought our Chesterfield sofa bed from designersofas4u.co.uk - still looks as new 4 years and a house move later. Very keen pricing but not great customer service and very inflexible around deliveries.

We bought ours at Abridge Auctions in, ummm, 1976. Mid Victorian, deep buttoned. Cost £60.
Had it reupholstered in tapestry, with some high-quality foam seat cushions.
Cost £550, which was over 5 months of the mortgage.
We hadn't asked the cost beforehand... we were horrified and very skint.



But it was still perfect when we had to sell it for lack of space, in 2011.

I would always look for antique furniture for a period house.

Thanks to everybody for there comments, especially Richard as we ended up going to the Saxon showroom on Friday and placing an order for a 3 and 2 seater Chesterfield along with a wingback chair and foot stool. We were torn on what colour/type of leather but the boss had the final decision on an antique tan colour.

They had a very impressive showroom, which also had a lookout over the factory floor where the sofas are hand built. We were browsing/procrastinating for over an hour, only being approached once by a member of staff asking if we needed any help with anything just to let her know which was refreshing, nothing worse than having your necked breathed down.

This is the design we chose for the 2 and 3 seater:


I really liked this one but decided it wasn't as comfy or as practical (not as easy to clean the inevitable food spills from the sprogs). It is however in the colour we chose:

I liked this green colour but was over ruled:


And also attracted to the aged/worn look of this finish, again over ruled. Probably rightly so on both counts.

Took delivery of my suite today. Very happy with both the product and the company, seamless experience from start to finish and the suite is stunning. Excuse the mess from my son in the photos but you get the idea.

Just in time for some serious Christmas slouching.

I like the clock as well. I really want a grandfather clock but can't buy one as I am due to inherit one (eventually in a long time I hope).

The grandfather clock is nothing special in that its mostly a stained plywood construction with a quartz movement. However its very special to us as it was made by my partners grandad years ago and he did a great job with it. It used to have a mechanical movement in it that failed which would be nice to reinstate at some point

They look good, you must be so pleased to have them in time for Christmas. It must be ‘Sofa Week’ as ours just returned from re-upholstery, I should update my topic here too.

We need new ones at some point, current ones were admittedly cheapies but even so have only lasted about 7 years, the most used seats are getting tired.
Won't be going for Chesterfields - they look lovely but I never find them comfortable - just me I think as many others like them!

Yes, admittedly not even had them a year yet but they are still as good as the day they arrived. The company do a wide variety of different suites with an extensive range of options to personalise them. I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Sounds good. One of the downsides of Feltwell Towers is the lounge only really has room for a 2 seat and a 3 seat sofa, anything extra would have to go in front of the bay window. Shame really as two armchairs of different sizes would suit us well, me and Mrs F also being of markedly different sizes!

Feltwell, our house is similar. I’ve got one big comfy sofa, but not enough room for another unless in front of the bay which would be a shame. The sofa doesn’t provide enough seating for the boys, girlfriends, other itinerants. So currently, I’ve got a chaise longue in the bay (re upholstery project in the future !) and two glorious ‘60s Parker knowle reclining armchairs in “Bordello red” velour I’ve grown to love them and super comfy reclined with feet in front of the fire

Yes, it's bad enough that no one wants to go in the middle seat of the 3 seat sofa!

We could do with space for an extra sofa really - by the time there's me, Mrs F, 3 offspring, daughter's boyfriend - it gets a bit snug. If my parents come round the kids get turfed out onto the rug!

It's not so much the size of the room, it's more that with a big bay window that goes down close to the floor, plus a big fireplace, there's not so much useable room left.

Same here-bay on the front, door on the opposite wall and fire on the other that doesn’t have a sofa! Come Christmas, it’s going to be every man for himself when the post-gorging film comes on
