Conflicting chimney liner advice, any help appreciated

I've removed an oil fired AGA and fitted an electric range cooker and want to fit a new blanking plate with an extractor hood in, the chimney chap that came to remove the old liner and blanking plate said to not use a liner, just vent the extractor hood into the chimney. We recently had a chimney sweep out to do a log burner flue in the living room and he said it needs a liner in there due to moisture. Now I'm concerned/confused about what should be done! Any help appreciated please!?!?

Its a brick chimney in a 16th century home.

I definitely wouldn’t just vent an extractor hood into a chimney as all the airborne fats from cooking etc will cool and condense on the inside of the chimney.

Even with a liner, unless it’s an incredibly beefy extractor, the fan will be unlikely to be powerful enough to shove all the steam and airborne fats up and out the top of the chimney before they cool.

Not sure if I still have photos but when I installed a hood above our electric range cooker, I core drilled out through the wall horizontally at extractor height and vented out through that

I am nearing the completion of a new kitchen install. I have tiled the back of the fireplace for a Rangemaster cooker to go into. I wanted to leave as much of the brick work exposed as I could, and my original intention was to use glass on the internal reveals of the fireplace as a way of protecting the bricks from cooking splashes. Thinking about this now I'm not sure if there might be a better or alternate way of protecting the brickwork, whilst remaining aesthetically pleasing. Also the fronts of the piers would probably benefit from some protection too. So how have/would others...

Ahh, thanks! That thread has a great idea! The hood I've got can be set up as a recirculating one with carbon filters (FWIW) so that might actually be the best route. If there was just a cooker in there and no extractor/cover plate, the fats/steam wound go up the chimney anyway right? How would they not condense and cause the same issues as with a hood?

To be fair the primary reason I fitted the extractor was its built in lighting it has!

Yep correct and almost definitely would condense and cause the same issues.

How dirty the filters/ chimney/ whatever gets is entirely due to how much and what type of cooking you do. The Miele service engineer had to visit our previous abode to fix a washing machine, he offered to replace the cooker hood filters for free and I thanked him but said it wouldn’t be needed. He said the unit was 10 years old and if I had never changed the filters it would definitely be needed. He opened the thing up and said it wasn’t needed He was used to dealing with people who liked cooking and stir fry and hot oil and I don’t do any of that. I love the Aga I have now and I love my big extractor with lights, I dust them lovingly, and they are shiny.
