Hello,
I've got an 1890 Victorian detached house with a damp cellar. There's no water visible but humidity is always around greater than 80rh and usually much higher. I'm in a very wet area of the country (Liverpool) and the outside humidity is rarely under 80%. I'm near the sea.
I want to ventilate effectively but I don't know how to do it with this shape of cellar as it is a kind of T shape with an extra bend. So it's not easy to create a simple through flow.
I could drill a hole into the old hatch space (was bricked up with breeze blocks and air bricks) and install an extractor fan. But, should I extract the damp cellar air or bring in clean (damp air from outside?).
I was thinking about placing filtered fans in the cellar to circulate the air and also at both of the openings to the crawl spaces. But, will this push out damp air through the air bricks?
The cellar is very musty so I really want to try and get rid of the smell. I've got mould growing at the bottom of the cellar where I was storing tools but have been clearing out and will treat. My goal is not to store anything at all there but just to prevent mould growth. Tanking is not an option. I'm looking to optimise air exchange.
Any suggestions and thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
