Dehumidifier for sub floor void?

To cut a long story short I have had an independent damp survey done and he has suggested i need a dehumidifier for under my floor to control moisture levels. Does anyone have experience with these types of dehumidifier? Im concerned about leaving something running under my floor and having no access to it when a carpet is down.

You should always have access to it for maintaining it, such as changing the air filter.

I would also be very concerned about the fire risk associated with installing any kind of electrical equipment in a void to which there was no direct and easy access. I have no idea is such equipment may be available on the market but perhaps a dehumidifier which is sited above the floor but drawing air from the void via a duct?

They are available, although a lot more common in the USA. There are smaller models, but I couldn't get the links to work.

why is he suggesting this? sounds very odd to me. Whats wrong with working air bricks?

Occasionally you get houses where it's not possible to get a decent cross flow of ventilation. Can be things like an extension with a solid floor and no ducts put in, high ground levels where they aren't on their property etc.
When set up properly, when are really effective at controlling the humidity under the floors.
However, they are really a.last resort, as generally air bricks are enough for most places.

There are also specially designed fans as well as dehumidifiers, which presumably are a bit less likely to go wrong...(No experience/never used but did wonder about this once)

Humidistat fans are generally a better option in subfloor voids as they require less maintenance. Dehumidifiers are going to constantly pull through ground water.
