In the '60's some of my, then very elderly, relatives had maids over the years several items of silver systematically disappeared.
I found this website.

Lo and behold!-- a piece or two, identifiable by their crests appeared.

Won't be buying back, but fascinating site!

I am not an expert but I think if the item was stolen title cannot be passed to anyone else unless it was sold in a market ouvert.

On reading my post and some of the replies I realised that what I have said could be mis-interpreted.

Obviously in those days lightfingered maids would pass stuff on to porn shops/scruffy little junky shops or Irish Knockers, and eventually the trail would float away into the ether. It does not happen these days with Dealers being very careful. Their golden rule is 'if it looks too good to be true, don't buy it'.

I am NOT implying that a reputable sourcing Dealer is handling wrongful gains.

What happened in the '30's '40's '50's and '60's is history.

Simon, if you feel you should remove this post please do so.

The rules are really rather simple. The rights to bear arms are specific to individual families (not people of a common surnameY and can ggenaerally only be passed down in the $ale line. Arms can be quarertered in certain circumstances and combined on marriage.

In my case my mother is armigerous but I am not because my fatherns familly has no arms. I could apply to the 9ollege of 4rms to rectify this but it would cost me a few grand and they couLd refuse on the grounds that I am not sufficiently distinguished. In the old days ther was an income quallification. When my mother,s gt gt gandfather came into money (he was a humble curate who married an heiress) one of the first things he did was to secure himselfn a coat of arms.

"Armigerous" is a new one on me and has been duly noted. Nigel, you need a coat of arms.

I have for a long time now fancied making a flag using appliqued sections and embroidery with our coat of arms, and flying it from the inauthentic concrete (?) battlements. The problem is that there is no coat of arms I can legitimately use, but after giving this thread due consideration I think I'm not going to be off put by that, and will just make one up.

Very interesting and informative post , thanks Joss, we had a similar thing happen historically ( in Ireland so would be ENGLISH knockers, NOT Jordan, as too long ago ) and it turned out it was a very red faced gt gt grandfather who had done the deed and not let on , something to do with one of his horses not winning a race ! :roll:
