Fireplace 1900 late victorian

Hi, The house was built in 1900 so I'm presuming an original fireplace ( no longer in use). Is it likely it would originally have been painted black, as it is now? Would that be the best thing to do with it? Any advice welcome.

Cast iron fireplaces were often black leaded so not a dense black. Personally I prefer more of a charcoal colour as also often suggested for railings. Three of ours are an off black, one of them is a off white. No reason why the surround (but not the bars, grate or fireback) shouldn't be painted white, cream, stone or any other colour that suits your decor or appeals to you.

There could well still be a slate or tile hearth under the carpet, and if you're keeping the carpet then you can run a metal trim round it and fit the carpet back to it. Fitting carpet into a an otherwise complete grate looks a bit odd and as seen here is not very practical.

Yeh. We have pulled the carpet up tonight and the tiles are there. I would like to.leave them uncovered so that's definitely a good idea. Thanks.
