Fitting carpets on suspended floors in a listed building

Hello, what's the tried and tested way to fit carpets on suspended floors in listed buildings?

If I let the carpet fitters have free reign they'll hammer a load of carpet grippers all over the place.

I assumed double sided tape on the underlay and carpet will be the way to go but not sure how well it holds in practice. I assume repeated vacuuming will pull at the corners.

On another site I was recommended Duralay Durafit, but I think this might have breathability issues and instructions call for it to be glued.

What have others done?

Underlay is typically left loose and is not fixed to the floor by any means. It is merely laid to meet the carpet grippers at the rooms perimeter. The grippers ensure that the underlay cannot spread or move to contact the outer walls and are typically fixed with a few very small diameter wire nails. The diameter of any holes they may leave behind post removal are so small they would escape detection without very close inspection. Adhesive tapes on the other hand can do considerably more damage to the floorboards when it, and any remaining adhesive residues, when removed later.

That said on a personal scale I/we despise fitted carpets and all such here have been removed.

Interesting point on the nail holes being small enough to not be considered an issue. I just assumed it was a serious no no.
As for carpets, we really just want them in the kids rooms. I don't want to be lifting boards every weekend because a very important lego piece as fallen through the cracks.
