This property has suffered from serious water ingress and froze which caused the outer skin of masonry to bulge out and colapse. This cottage is not lived in and on the North Pembrokeshire Coast.
The roads round us in London seem to have developed lots of potholes since the snowy weather, especially those which have been dug up repeatedly, which is most of them. Water getting into cracks and then freezing I guess.
It's not so much the fact that it freezes, it's that lately it's thawed and freezed repeatedly in a cycle that damages the roads. Water gets into a crack - freezes, expands and widens the crack - thaws and re-fills the crack, then re-freezes, expands again and makes the crack a bit wider again - etc etc.
The problems this has caused the roads has made the national press, certainly round here the potholes have got much worse.
I suffered some damage to my house, mostly where things were already not quite right. A cracked cast iron shoe on a downpipe has now split completely, the stone step outside my front door has suffered where lowering the drive level revealed an old crack which then got water in it. Some pointing on the new wall next to my drive needs re-doing, and where I have yet to fit gutters on my new garage, a couple of the bricks low down have lost their faces, where they were saturated from melt-water running off the roof which then froze.
