Lovely. Where are you going?
It is, isn't it? We love it dearly.
Heartbreaking to leave it but, like the Penroses, we want to be nearer to our children. The distance from London means that we see them far too seldom.
However, we're trying to think of it as yet another exciting adventure, though the prospect of shoehorning 2500 square feet of furniture and possessions into something less than half the size is a bit mind-boggling. The charity shops are going to have a field-day.
But, hey! We'll be galloping to the rescue of yet another house that's drowning in a concrete overcoat.

Well if you could just drop everything off in the charity shops in Diss rather than Norwich it would be very much appreciated. How sad to have to leave it, but how exciting to move somewhere new, I always think moving house feels like being on holiday for the first couple of years.

I think you're a saint Moo. How lucky your children are to have you.
The house is so beautiful, even lovelier of course in real life than in the pics, and I'm sure the next owners will treasure it as you have, as the glorious period features and grandeur of it speak for themselves. I wish we could buy it and be in the heart of Norwich like that but a) where would the fluffs live b) still too in love with BC. Still, yours is my kind of perfect house.
I've often thought a retirement in London would be really exciting though, all the music, theatre and dance that's on offer, fascinating courses on any topic you could think of, and the best restaurants and shopping. And just think, fewer rooms is less time spent cleaning! All the very best for the house hunting and selling - and yes - I wish I were nearer those charity shops too! Maybe PPUKe needs an Ebay type section to it!
Will you be going for one of the Georgian or Victorian type properties in London?

Typical! Just when we've got used to having somewhere reliable for a good cup of coffee (not to mention lunch) in the centre of Norwich, they pack up and move the business elsewhere.

Oh Moo, your house is beautiful--I wish----.Anyway, like us the decision to be nearer the kids is a necessary one, so here's wishing you the very best of luck with the house hunting, and hope that you will still be within reach.

As regards downsizing, we did that when we moved to London in 2003, and then again when we moved out in 2010, so I know how you (will) feel. I was pleased to leave the place and so I don't envy you the move at all; I love the countryside and it's so much more relaxed.
People often like to quote Samuel Johnson "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." Personally I thought that was tosh. More like "when a man is tired of London, he is tired of paying such high prices for everything!"
Oh, we gave up looking near the centre very early on! Both our children are, mercifully, in SE London, so we've ended up looking in SE22. Still expensive when you compare it with Norwich, but sort of similar to our present location, with lots of shops, cafes and buzz right on the doorstep.
We looked at the deeper suburbs, but I think I'd go mad there - street after street of very pleasant houses, but we'd spend our lives driving to and from the shops. We're used to popping down to the market for our food, and round the corner to M&S and a choice of three department stores. And, of course, the blessed Thorns.

Lovely house Moo, it must be a real wrench to put it up for sale. I think London is one of those places that you know if it's for you or not - I've always regarded it as being lovely to visit but not to live in, and that was proved right to me when I did live there for a short period. I can see the attraction though, without doubt, and being close to family is a great thing.

My SiL used to live on Peckham Rye, opposite the open common. Lovely old house, lovely location (if you like city living) but she wasn't so keen on her kids being mugged for their mobile phones on the way to school. She also wasn't so keen on the school open evenings (she was a teacher) where she said the parents were often more aggressive and frightening than their children. So they all moved to Spain about 10 years ago.

I do very much agree with all the other comments though, it is a lovely house. I hope it finds the right new owners. SE 22 is Dulwich isn't it? Nice area.

When we lived down in Hampshire it was a 4 hour drive to see either set, which is not great with a baby. Since we moved - when our eldest was 18 months old and our middle one was 7 days old (!) - then it is great for the kids to be able to see their grandparents more often, generally every 3-4 weeks or so. We live close enough that it's convenient, but not so close that you can "just pop in" without calling to check first - which works both ways of course!
