Gap filling between brickwork and cast iron windows in outbuilding

Hi there, working on an old Victorian stables and due to some movement over the years, there is quite a significant gap between the exposed brickwork and the cast iron windows (1-2cm in some cases). Not keen on using sealant etc so what would be the best way to these gaps. This is for an outbuilding so doesn't need to be perfectly sealed as it will be a workshop when finished. Thanks

you could use lime mortar,

Pack the cavity with oakum or caulking cotton, or a hemp/jute rope (8mm sash cord) braided to make a thicker rope. Oakum is very expensive and you are not likely to need the 3 kilo bales usually sold so the CC or the rope may be your best bet. Leave a rebate/trench 2-3mm deep above the CC or rope packed into the cavity and paint it with a generous coat of linseed oil. Later, fill the rebate with either a lime mortar or filler but at a push you could also use glazing putty as this last fillet is sacrificial.
