Garage door opening

I'm planning to add a 2.5m opening in the gable of my barn. I'm keen to have a sanity check.

I'll use a steel lintel 3m wide. It's not holding a lot of weight but I'm going heavy duty 230mm tall just because it's cheaper to overdesign than pay for calcs. I have this thing in mind: https://iglintels.com/product/ibeam-3c/

Plan is to remove the chimney down to just above roof level, insert a number of acro props, make a slot for the beam, install it, then remove the chinmey by taking out a few courses of chimney bricks at a time from below and building back up in line with the wall, the idea being to leave some structure in place to keep things stable. I have a super tall acro to support the ridge beam while this is going on.

Does that sound like a sensible sequence or is there an easier way?

Sounds like a sensible sequence presuming you mean to install the lintel from the inside and can prop the slot without obstructing the lintels entry?

Yup, access for lifting a steel with a Genie lift isn’t much fun with props in the way, or indeed a wall as the feet need to go under and beyond the steel location.

It's a good point and I hadn't planned acro prop locations. Guess I'll need to put them inside and install the steel from outside. I would feel a bit more comfortable with one acro outside to support the chimney but there should be room to put the steel in from the side. It's not crazy heavy so ought to be possible to lift one end onto the chimney then lift the other end and slide it into place.

How were you planning to support the chimney long term? I'd assumed you would put a 'gallows bracket' in place.

I have planning permission to add an opening and remove the chinmey. I like the chimney but it makes no sense above an opening.
