Hi folks,
I'm removing the cement render from the back of our house. It's a big mix of delaminated and well bonded sections. I'm using hand tools in order to do as little damage as possible.
It appears the house has been painted with a maroon limewash at some point in the past. This seems to have helped save some bricks but as you can see it's fairly patchy.
Across the 50+ sqm there's a lot of bricks to repair or reverse. I plan to rake out all the joints and repoint in lime.
But I'm unsure the best way to approach the surface of the bricks. For any stubborn cement stains I plan to use Lithofin Cement Away. But what about the limewash?
Strippers of Sudbury note that limewash is difficult to remove, they recommend repeated coats of their Aciclean product followed by powerwashing. Is this similar to Cement Away?
I've looked into DOFF but it's not an option due to the cost and our location. Also as I understand it, any sort of abrasive sanding could damage the bricks further.
Another option may be to let it weather, once the bricks are cleaned up and pointed it may not look too bad.
We thought perhaps to live with it for a few years and see how it ages, and then decide weather to clean, render in lime, or limewash.
Has anyone encountered similar or have any thoughts?
