Ideas please?

A friend of mine has to insert two tie rods through a chimney stack, to tine the front and back of the stack together. He's got some threaded stainless steel rod, and a couple of "S" shaped load-spreading plates to put on the outside of the building. However, he wants to use something a bit decorative for load-spreading on the inside face of the chimney, as the plates will be seen above the sitting room fireplace. His budget is just about zero!
Anyone got any bright ideas as to what he could use, please?

I did something similar through the house.
On the external wall I put hanging basket brackets
Or he could put an L shape plinth and place orniments on them.
Or something of Brass or copper......................?

One more idea. Wrought iron design of soughts
Or black painted olde looking steel/iron wheel barrow/wagon wheels (miniture maybe)
Or down in the shape of a hook so he can hang fire implements on them.

Is the chimney stack plastered.
Can he hide the plates in the plaster?

Geoffrey (51) at Knedlington had plates made up which he hid inside brickwork. This was for external ties, which are not apparent to the eye. It may be possible to do something similar?

Personally, I'd go for simple snd functional - the S brackets internally would be my choice! Or simple round metal plates.

Possibly the building is a historic one, it's listed and this sort of repair - conserve not replace - is what sound conservation practice is?

Of course a builder with no idea about these things may suggest rebiuilding, but it's not what anyone with much sensitivity to historic fabric would do...

The "cowboy" is the owner of the house, who prefers to conserve its historic fabric with an honest repair, rather than throwing it away.
Why do you find it necessary to be so offensive about that?

David - I've seen simple tie bars inside buildings doing this sort of work, and if made by a blacksmith can look smashing! It's honest and of course excellent conseravtive repair.

Possibly we have Bob the Builder trolling the site, a friend of Phil etc?

I agree that simple conservation steelwork can look very much at home in a period property. I think my friend is simply hoping that someone will have a bright idea for the internal load-spreaders that will save him money - of which he has a paucity!
Yes - we seem to have attracted the attention of a troll. A self-appointed expert in all building-related matters, no doubt.

I think brass or copper might be a bit soft for this job, but I quite like the idea of an angleiron bracket which could be used for mounting a shelf. I'll pass it on to my friend (and I'll try to resist the temptation to say it's my own idea!)

Well, I've simply responded with what I think are more appropriate measures and approaches where period buildings are concerned! Otherwise, threads can be read in future with inappropriate advice and people may be misled.

I'm too busy at the moment to argue too much - possibly at this point I should simply admit I KNOW NOTHING AT ALL ABOUT HISTORIC BUILDINGS, my ideas are TOTAL RUBBISH, I have no friends or I have a load of cronies on this site who may support my barking ideas but who know nothing either, and I should shut up, stop posting and get a life!

That may save trolls a great deal of trouble!

Oh, I've had years of it also - I'm not utterly convinced of the ignore them and they stop approach. It doesn't always, especially with Special Needs..

I know - but sometimes, just sometimes, they deserve to be lead astray - some trolls are more instantly apparent than others. Some are rather more sophisticated than others, too, with elaborate set-ups and working with aliases and with others.

Evelyn this is not a dig at you to try and start another long tread as we had last week, but could you tell me what your fascination is with trolls/people with differing views to the few?
I was right about one thing last week, anyone posting a differing view must be a troll.
I got into the thread last week through pure boredom and not to become a so called troll, yes maybe I was wrong in doing so but it past the night away. Evelyn you will have to learn to appreciate that every now and again people are going to have differing views/ideas on how to solve problems.

Trolls - look at the Phil thing - that was classic trolling. Phil does not exist and the whole thing was simply a set up, a scam, intended to cause trouble. Where people's livelihoods are concerned it's not amusing. So joining in and supporting these idiots is possibly not something which endears people to you?

We've been there before with Richard! It's as well for people to be aware. Thankfully, most of us who post regularly are not easily deterred.

I'm perfectly happy for people to have different views, as long as they are well-informed ones, but so often they conflict with accepted good practice where historic buildings are concerned. So I say so, as do others, we have a great deal of expertise around on this site. Too much damage is done to period buildings by the inept with the wrong approaches. Some post wrong advice simply because they think it amusing.

The Damp thread, you may be interested to know, was spotted as a set up pretty quickly. Not the most sophisticated of trolling.

Some of us have a rather odd and ironic sense of humour. We are also busy people who give freely of our time and sometimes are brief and to the point. Like now. I have a mega piece of writing to do to try to save a rather important building from demolition. I'm not being arrogant but I'm the one who has the expertise and the knowledge about it, has done the research, who can go into detail dismissing the 'justification' supplied by the Historic Buildings Consultant for the developer. It's hard and high level stuff, with a great deal at stake. So sorry I really can't waste much more time tonight on this.

to the steel plate or screwed
Can you weld brass or copper on to steel??
