Hi All,
Brand new to the page and forum. We own a stone cottage in Argyll in Scotland which we are working on renovating.
I am currently removing some panelling in a downstairs bedroom to check the wall behind it. I’m finding some areas with a lot of dirt/sand/disintergrated mortar and it looks like the walls could do with repointing. (Please see the photos)
Im wondering whether I need to repoint the walls if I am going to keep them panelled. We were questioning whether we should insulate behind the panels but from reading websites and books with info from SPAB we were just going to leave the 2 inch gap so there is breathing room incase moisture gets through.
The room is north east facing so barely gets any sunshine on it (and it’s Scotland!) so it is colder inside and wetter on the exterior. We are planning on having a wood burner installed in the room and run a radiator large parts of the day.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Pete
