I’ve heard it mentioned on here but haven’t paid a lot of attention if I’m honest as here in Wales it’s that wet I assumed any rot to contend with would be just wet rot!
I’ve been very slowly working on a ground floor reception room in between other jobs that was by far the dampest area of the house. The room is entered from the hallway and on this internal wall between the room and the hallway is a small coat cupboard on the hallway side.
The cupboard has also smelled damp in the past although I think it’s been a little better since I added some wall vents for more air circulation. Anyway, on the inside of this cupboard on the internal wall side there was this piece of rotten skirting. I cut it out this evening and it’s very brittle with this odd looking stuff on the back of it. Is this dry rot?
If so I wonder if the whole internal wall could have to come down. It’s a single skin old style brick laid within wooden studs but all of the studs along the bottom of this wall viewed from the room side are all crumbled and long gone. I’m actually not quite sure what is holding the wall up to be honest as the majority of the bottom course have dropped away having been sat on what was once a wooden beam which is also mostly non-existent.
Fairly sure it’s not a supporting wall as if it was there would be at least signs of cracks but the wall seems to more or less float, I guess sandwiched in place
