Apologies if this has been discussed previously, but I’m looking for some advice from those with more knowledge.
I’m currently renovating an old sandstone farmhouse which over the years has had lots of alterations. The house was previously rendered externally with sand and cement which was in a tired state, plus internally it was plastered in similar causing all sorts of damp issues. Everything has been hacked off both externally and internally and the walls have dried out remarkably. I’ve seen better stone work, but I wanted to keep the stone exposed externally for now so have made a start repointing all the external walls with lime mortar.
Beaten by the winter weather, I’m looking to make a start internally until the spring when I can finish the pointing works outside. Internally there is also a lot of repointing work to be done and some dubbing out to get the walls to a reasonable level before I can start to insulate and plaster. I like the idea of wood fibre boards for insulation but with having to dub out the walls so much in areas, I’m leaning towards using insulating lime plaster for all the external walls. Being a narrow house, there is a lot of external walls, and access to some rooms via corridors and passing the bottom of the stairs is already tight, so I can’t afford to loose too much space either.
A majority of the house retains its original stone work/lime mortar, but some of the works I’ve uncovered including some underpinning work has shown previous owners/builders have used block works and cement mortar. Is it ok to apply lime plaster straight to these surfaces so it all matches, or is there another alternative I should be looking at?
