We have opened up a fireplace in our living room. The house is 18 century and is mainly stone and brick. However when we opened up the fireplace we discovered some cob. This is mainly at the rear of the fireplace and seems to extend up the chimney. We have applied some lime render to this to protect it and will be limewashing it (as we have done with the rest of the internal walls. However, at the base of the fireplace there is a small stone wall. This is about 3 feet high and I am guessing was built to protect the cob from the heat from the fire. The stones are fine but not particularly pretty. We don't like the idea of removing them as we think they were probably put there for a reason, but we are not sure how they should be finished off. We could repoint them and then seal them with something but our current preferred option was to limewash them. Will this work? We intend to put a woodburner in front.
Thanks in advance.
