Hi all
We have a C17th Century Grade 2 listed house with a cellar. We want to use the cellar as a music / pastime room - space.
The cellar has a single door with a single vent in the door and its structure comprises a brick arched roof to a height of just on 7 feet and is approx. 25 feet x 30 feet. It has previously been tanked to a height of around 3 foot with what looks breeze blocks & a membrane. No signs of a water run - off or extraction pumps. There are no puddles or running water or signs of water leaking through / over the tanking.
However the humidity level is a fairly constant 75% and a temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideally we want to reduce the humidity level to around 50 - 60%. Additionally the brick arch has spalling and signs of salts leaking through. We are considering painting the brick arch with a lime wash type of finish.
My questions:
1. What would you suggest we do to lower the humidity level further. Is an extractor fan installed into the door a way to go ?
2. How would you suggest we treat the brick arch ? I suspect the source of damp is the brick arch, so breathable paint / brick treatment suggestions would be useful.
Thanks for any advice
Best
