Newbie shelf building

Hi, I am a complete newbie to carpentry and joinery.

I am wanting to build a shelf above my kitchen sink which is in a corner.

I absolutely love this inspiration here. Particularly the top and middle shelf style (ie. without the back panel?)



How are they fixed to the wall? As I say, as a newbie I just can’t quite wrap my head around how they’re secured. I would be mounting them onto a solid wall.

Any help truly appreciated. Let me know if any further info is required.

There are shelves like that in our old pantry. The brackets are screwed to vertical timbers (about 1"x4") from the back, and these are then fastened to the wall from the front. There is no bracket at the end, the shelves at that point being embedded in the plaster. I managed to add shelves in the same style, and this one of my reproduction shelf brackets. I used ex 1"x4" to match existing, but ex 1"x3" (20mm x 70mm) should be ample.

On reflection you might also be able to use one of the 'floating shelf' systems to fasten the brackets directly to the wall, or fit floating shelves with purely decorative brackets...
