Hello,
The lower half of an interior ground floor wall next to the street was sounding hollow so I called a lime plasterer I have used in the past to repair it with lime. The house is brick and 300 years old.
Last year he repaired part of a garage wall with lime but it is brittle at ground level and there is salt coming through in areas higher up. This time he suggested using something called Newtonite which he explained is a membrane that acts as a barrier between plaster and salty brickwork. It doesn't sit flat against the brickwork to allow airflow and prevents sweating. He's already plastered with gypsum. I was concerned at the time and am now wondering if this was a big mistake. I questioned him about this and he said in my case the salts would probably start coming through the lime plaster. He said when he renovated his house he used lime plaster throughout but salt and damp were still coming through some areas so he tried this system and was happy with it. But for how long I wonder...
There was never a problem of salt coming through this wall before however so I am kicking myself and am pretty sure I should get this removed. Do you agree? It sounds like the dreaded tanking. Appreciate your comments and advice.
