Odd looking beams

Looking at a house at the moment that has these odd looking beams that extend from the ceiling at angles down a part sloping roof - in all upstairs rooms. Just wondered if they might be covering some kind of structural wall tie between front and back? Any opinions? Or is this normal - haven't seen it before?

Nothing unusual there. The long horizontal timber across the ceiling is a 'tie beam' which connects the two timbers forming a main 'truss' which in turn supports the roof.
