If you look at the words 'adjacent to' beneath the pic the house I think is just above, there's a coach parked to the left of it?

In the 80s I, and most people on the allotment plot, built greenhouses or sheds with windows just like that :-(
That's when most houses round here were destroyed (aka improved)
Now even the allotment plot has been levelled so the windows will exist no more.

From the website linked above "the village street, through which flows Morland Beck, remains picturesque and unspoiled." I suppose it depends on what is meant by 'unspoiled'.

It mostly is - sadly in these wonderful Cumbrian villages, as with so many places, progress and the placcy window saleman have both caught up with time... it's heartbreaking to see how much is being spoilt. I have no doubt the woners think what they are doing is fine...

No, there's no law unless it's listed - apart from Part L or whatever.

It's just some peole are daft enough to think this sort of vandalism is an improvement.

The worst thing about the styling is that 'orrible band of rendering around the windows and door. Of course we all know why it was done, to try to stop water ingress around the openings. Don't we all love traditional houses.

It's not rendering - it's stone. Very traditional in Cumbria, and traditional to paint it.

Oh dear indeed. Just this weekend I spent a whole day sanding and repainting the original sash window in my kitchen after having it re-corded while next door's were being taken out and replaced by UPVC (not listed and despite conservation area you can do what you like if its not seen from the front...)

Where I live you can do what you like full stop, in conservation areas and even on listed buildings, cos the local authority is useless.

Not sure what's orrible about it - it's what frames the windows. Simple and effective really. Incorporates a lintel and a cill...

Yes I have those "horrible surrounds" round my Cumbrian house. As does almost every house round here more than 50 years old!

Some houses and barns round here have them too ( Wensleydale) but the stone is a much nicer colour. The vertical liners crack after about 300 years as the mortar in the stone courses erodes leaving the lower liners supporting the upper storey. So they are not much of a design feature ? I've tried to find out why only some properties have them, the best answer I've had so far is that it is only a style thing. Perhaps the stone masons came from Cumbria?

Seriously if they last 300 years I'd consider that pretty durable - especially if a repoint every...lifetime would prevent the erosion
