Paint on stone

My son has recently moved to an 1845 stone cottage with painted Bathstone window reveals. There are several bare patches where the paint has come off with several layers of stone. What is the current ‘best’ method of treating and re-painting over this? House cottage is part of listed terrace so needs consistent repair. Picture shows one of the smaller patches. Help!

Remove the hideous old paint and embrace the beauty of the weathered stone!

Agreed, I would scrape it all off using a heat-gun and some kind of edged scraper and then either leave it bare or paint it with a breathable paint like clay-based or lime wash that won’t bubble and delaminate.

remove the old paint &if you must paint it use lime wash, it will take a few coats probably 4-5 on bare walls & need topping up every three or so years

Great thoughts but rest of terrace has painted window reveals and is listed, so complete removal not an option. Was hoping that since I last dealt with a listed property there might have been developments in breathable paint tech! Suspect neighbours all just use Dulux or Crown, but I would like a more conservation minded solution.

A more conservation minded solution is to scrape all the existing paint off and use limewash or a clay based paint as suggested above.

If a finish has poor adhesion you are best to remove it anyway. What you repaint it with is another matter and one of much discussion. I point people to Ingilby of Sudbury as they make paints for some of the most historic buildings in the country and seem to be very knowledgeable. Never used any of their products myself but my clients and their contractors have. I like the fact they take a pragmatic approach (like myself) and they offer full traditional solutions, semi modern and modern and can advise the pros and cons of all of them.
