Plumbing for old WC *PIC*

We are about to get some pipe made up to connect a high level cistern to a re-claimed pan. The pan has what looks like a 'breather' on the trap. Has anyone experience of plumbing a pan like this? A friendly 'expert' says that maybe the cistern connected to the pan via both inlets, but I can not see this myself.....though I am no expert in these matters. My guess would be to block the inlet on the trap, but what do I know. Any clues anyone?

looks like it has a connector for an anti syphon system.

basicly, the smaller pipe connects to the soil stack the WC connects to but a couple of meters above the 4 inch connection

stops the water being syphoned out of the trap!

This type of long-drop is usually supplied with an ornate, hand crafted 'Richard III pole' and that big orifice is so you can poke the big ones down.

Yes, 'i wonder' has it, it's a vent, similar to a modern anti-syphon trap. It prevents a vacuum forming behind the water esal, but vents any smells into the soil & vent stack. I don't know any other details, I think there's details of such old plumbing systems in some text books, for reference only (e.g., Construction of Buildings by Barry). You can also sometimes see the old CI drainage pipes & the puff pipes on the back of old buildings. You could probably cap it, but I'd be tempted to try to connect it.

Just to amend that, it's in my edition of Volume 5 of 'Construction of Buildings'.

The vent doesn't connect to the S&V stack. The puff pipe wasn't originally connected into a stack but had an open end on the face of the external wall. The fear of drain smells then led to this being adapted to the 2 pipe system, with all the vents connected to a separate stack (common between the wars, it says).

Many thanks 'i wonder' and Aidan. So it would connect to the stack and not 'share' the cistern flow (that never sounded right to me!). So next problem/question. The waste will have to take a 90 degree turn and travel about 18 inches before reaching the stack, so we would not be able to connect this vent to a point higher on the stack unless we ran an identical route (say 4 inches higher). This would mean drilling another hole in the outside wall - not really preferable. So is it back to square one (cap it) or is there anything that I have missed. Can I just say thank goodness we are not discussing sash windows here - far more civilised advice and postings when dealing with toilets......

Maybe run a narrower pipe out through the wall, if that would make it all work out ok. That would be ok with modern drains.

It's a rather pretty loo though!

Have you a seat for it? It may pose a bit of difficulty getting one to fit... and of reasonable qulaity...

It doesn't connect to the stack, it would have connected to a separate anti-syphon stack. The pic shows the 1 pipe system. The earlier 2-pipe system had one stack for WCs & one for baths and basins. Both had anti-syphon stacks, making 4 stacks.

You shouldn't have to connect the puff pipe with a modern single stack system. You can get anti-syphon fittings for 1 1/2" drain pipe; you could fit one of those to avoid drilling the wall, but the placcy may not suit.

Wow! that's a lovely seat. It's going to be so comfy. Make sure you have space for books/magazines near it.

A modern loo seat is a travesty. My Mum and Dad have one like that in the outside loo, sadly they still use it, so I'll have to wait and see if they move. If they do, it's mine! Even my old bakelite loo seats are comfy though, they just don't look so good.

I have a lovely old loo seat - solid mahogany - just like that, comfy etc, sadly, it doesn't fit the repro loo we have! Sooo.. we paid a large amount of dosh for a new one, which when you lift the seat says, on a silverish plaque, 'Heritage'. I thought about writing 'SAVE Britain's' above it, but now that, after a few months of use, the wood is starting to crack, I think 'English' is possibly more accurate.

Re sash pockets... read the wikipedia link far below to internet trolls by susanelizabeth. It explains great deal. Ignore these idiots, be aware of them, don't let the losing of innocence allow us to attack new and genuine posters.

I had to look it up.

You could connect the puff pipe to a single stack S&V if the connection were higher than all the other connections; otherwise there's some risk of discharges going down the puff pipe.

The vented drains became obsolete as a result of BRE research which showed that the syphonage of traps could be avoided by careful design of the discharges into a single stack. The Americans still use vented drains apparently; their plumbing codes "obsess" about trap vents.
