Recommendation for Builder who can repoint with lime mortar ?

Hi All,

I've noticed in the last couple of years we've had some mortar failing in the external brickwork.
As I've got some spare cash at the moment i'd like to get it repaired plus a few frost damaged bricks.
House is from 1894 and lime mortar appears to have been used in its construction.

Can any of you recommend someone in the Solihull or West Midlands area who is sympathetic to period properties and has experience using lime mortar who'd be able to do these repairs?

A chap called Dan Bloom was recommeded to me by someone on this site. He came round, was very professional and knowledgeable, gave a good quote but was adamamt that he was only going to do brickwork, no cleaning or restoration of stonework, so I used someone else who claimed to be able to do both brickwork and stonework. It turned out that the people I used could do neither, and I really regret not using Dan. I cannot give a personal endorsement of his work, but I would try him out next time I need stuff doing. We have used Dan. Nice chap, great work. He rebuilt a chimney stack for us, or he opened one back up and built a new one on top.

Also found a chap called Martin Power who lives just down the road from me and is listed a Stonemason who does period repairs and has good feedback on the "MyBuilder" website, some of which is for lime mortar repointing.

I lived in Acocks Green from 1990 - 94. Small world

Apart from chimneys and other high parts, I would recommend trying it yourself. It takes time to apply properly, of course, but then that's what you will be paying your tradesman for.

NHL 3.5 or 5, sharp sand and some building sand; then experiment with the mix for colour. I found that building sand is the part that provides the colour. I used a mix of 2.5 sharp sand, 0.5 local building sand and 1 NHL by volume and got a good match.
