I've moved into an 1820/30s stone cottage on the outskirts of Wrexham last year.
I am a decent DIYer and a cabinet maker by trade.
I'm repointing an internal, structural stone wall in an upstairs bedroom.
The original mortar is very crumbly and not sound.
This wall is about 300-350mm thick. When I remove a section of mortar it is very crumbly and also has some quite deep voids! At the moment I am removing most of the old mortar which is failing and not just 20-30mm (150mm in some places)
I am doing it in small sections as I don't want it to lose too much integrity while the new mortar goes off.
Is this the best way of doing this?
Or can I get away with a basic repoint? I've already used 60kg of mortar and still have a long way to go!
