Slightly daft patio question

Finished laying stage 1 of patio this weekend, photo shows where the slabs overhang slightly on a step, obviously the mortar falls through when pointing/grouting.

Assume there is no point in trying to fill these gaps as it will just fall out again, and so the done thing is just to leave those gaps empty?

I wouldn't leave it like that myself. You can stick a bit of tape along the bottom. You can also bond the sides with SBR/cement mix, and then point it up. When it's gone off, remove the tape.
Another method is to use a bit of Stixall on the bottom first and then point it up.
