Soundproofing a wall.

Last night while having a piddle I thought OMG, my toilet will be right up against the dining room wall , the wall made of very thin daub. :shock:
Having a dinner party, the inlaws are there,''i'm just popping to the bathroom'' it all goes quiet, spladooosh.

I need to soundproof that wall. Anybody done this before? (soundproofing).

Egg boxes (and specialist acoustic foam) is good for reducing reflections but not that great for preventing transmission. A thin timber/daub wall is going to be a problem, though at least the level of noise to be contained should be reasonable low (hopefully!).

My limited understanding, from music rehearsal rooms, is that density and thickness of walls is the thing for deadening sound. Some ideas and principles here, though I'm not sure how many could be practically applied to a thin daub wall:

I would be thinking about a free standing wall with acoustic absorbing infill. What you want to avoid is fixing anything new to the old wall as the sound will transmit from one side to the other.

(We filled our new stud walls with acoustic insulation - it made no noticeable difference as the plasterboard on either side allowed sound transmission via the stud work.)

That's strange - it worked for us. We had to slice off a chunk of a bedroom to create two small shower rooms; the builders erected a stud wall filled with some sort of insulating material and the only sound that can be heard (if you listen hard) is a very faint echo of the loo flushing.

Oh I'm sure that it has made some difference and it was probably worth putting the sound insulation in but it certainly doesn't stop all the sound. Our doors aren't very soundproof either which is probably were the noise escapes.

I don't know if shelves are possible Rob, like a big bathroom cabinet on one side and a large bookcase on the other, that might help.

Vermiculite works well in wall spaces.
The optimum space for minimum noise transmission between two hard surfaces (of wall or double glazing) is 11 inches.
(as I recall from my 1950s leaflets.)

I've got a victorian high level cistern as well, the big cast iron ones, thats going to make one hell of a racket when I pull the chain.

Toilet noises are pretty unmistakable.

I don't understand the problem. In Georgian times it was not unknown for chamber pots to be provided in the dining room itself so that the gentlemen could relive themselves without having to leave the room and interrupt the conversation.
