Hi everyone!
Breaking a few rules here; I'm a British expat living in Austria, and my purchased home was built in 1969... but I found a few posts in this forum that were really knowledgeable on floor finishing - so hoped you could help!
We've been renovating a wooden staircase. It's the original staircase from the house, it seems to be made out of pine, and the previous owner had glued laminate on top of it.
After removing the laminate and MANY hours of sanding (40>80>120 grit), we've got all the glue off and are back to raw, old pine.
Now, we want to give the stairs a bit more colour (to closer match the engineered oak floors we have on the different floors of the house), and properly finish them.
I had been recommended OSMO hardwax finishes, and was working towards using the Osmo honey tint (3071), followed by the semi-matt clear coat (3032). After testing a single coat of honey tint on a couple of steps (after testing on some wood), it came out poorly - blotchy on some grain parts, darkening to near black some places. Customer service told me it might be because I used white spirit to clean the stairs rather than methylated spirits, leaving some resedue... and possibly because I wiped of excess.
I've attached photos of the sanded stairs and some of the stained steps.
THE REQUEST:
Having read opinions on Osmo products here, it seems to me there's not a lot of love for these products and the finishing it gives for high-traffic areas like stairs.
What would you recommend for finishing these stairs?
I can always re-sand the tested steps.
Thank you for your help!!
