Undercoat for painting over dark coloured lime plaster walls

Hi All
I’m painting over a dark coloured lime plastered wall but wanted to use an undercoat first that’ll be cheaper than the main finishing coat.
I can only find 1 undercoat from Little Greene that’s specific for lime plaster.

Has anyone else used something different as an undercoat / base coat? I guess we want to stay away from cheap emulsion even if we thin it with water.

Little Greene breathable stuff so thinking we’ll remove what we can but if we can’t get it all off then wanted an undercoat to use first

Limewash is very cheap but will need a fair few coats to make any impact in terms of coverage on a dark background

Some of us on here and elsewhere suspect the major paint manufacturers are cashing in on the heritage house revival of recent years. I doubt Little Greene paint is breathable in the the true sense of the concept, not even their distemper. Its worth noting they won't reveal the ingredients of any of their paints. I pushed them hard to reveal the ingredients of their distemper last year but they steadfastly refused.

If the wall in question has survived perfectly happily with the current Little Greene paint I would say any white emulsion would make a suitable undercoat.
