When is exposed internal stone wall acceptable?

Afternoon all,

Abit of a random question but as we go around the house decorating, we are knocking (well its mostly falling off on its own) all the gypsum plaster on all internal walls (external are wood boarded and lime plastered, or will be).

My question is when is it acceptable to leave exposed internal stone walls because I would leave one exposed in every room, but been told that might be too much. so what are peoples take on leaving exposed stone internally?

My current thoughts are the following.
large internal wall in main bedroom exposed.
wall as you go up the stairs.
Internal wall in bathroom
large wall in utility
and then large wall in dinning room.

i will leave the 3 other bedrooms, front room, kitchen and glass extension thing all lime plastered when we get round to it.

i know its a little vague because you dont know my layout but what are people thoughts on that, too much, go for it? i plan to lime plaster the edges in a sort of zig zap pattern.

Personally, I think leaving one wall exposed is naff - It's a symbolic show of rusticision but without the confidence of completing the job.
It's sort of "Look, genuine stone wall" in inverted commas.

I sort of agree to a certain extent, but I do think a full room of exposed stone is too much, which is why I am wanting it as a feature wall for the room/s

It’s a bit of a modern fad I’m afraid. Especially just a ‘feature’ wall…

Equally, the practicality of it is not great - dust from the stone, dust trap on the million ledges, spiders webs…

What’s the reason?

If you want the aesthetic, lime wash or better still, bag rub.

It's your home, you have to live within it and it's yours to make any howling mistakes you desire. But then all similar design questions here are deferred to the Chief Design Authority - but that's not me, so no cans for me to carry.

Absolutely it’s your house so go for the amount of revealed stone that makes you happiest!

Generally apart from the odd chimney breast left exposed I have always plastered, lime washed or bag rubbed internal stone, but that’s entirely down to the look I preferred.

Sorry, those photos are appropriate in Disneyland only. The second one, with random plaster edges, is as naff as you can get.

There's stonework that was always meant to be on show, and stonework that was never meant to be seen again, that fireplace being an example of the latter.

Even then there are 'smooth' houses where it would never be appropriate, and castles, rougher cottages and conversions etc.) where nicely finished stone (or brick) would be honest if still not very practical.

That second image is truly terrible… the first just looks like someone ran out of plaster, or steam!

Aside the aesthetics, there is obviously the practical side as mentioned.

Rubble stone though is a building material, not a show one. Would never have been seen. Same as most churches, the modern Victorian idea to remove their render. There are obviously dressed stone exceptions.

The thought of cutting in the paint against that exposed stonework is giving me palpitations....

Best admired from the outside IMO.

We are looking at this for a wall or two, but i think we prefer the limewashed look, sort of like this with some of the stone faces showing.

How do i go about sorting out the dust? The benefits of lime plastering is it covers over the dust, whereas im not sure limewash will, has anybody done this and more importantly how did you do it and hopefully you have photos so i can see

From that photo I’d say that wall isn’t lime washed, it’s just been repointed with a lime mortar and then the joints not fully brushed back

Limewash generally doesn’t dust unless it has been applied with a mix that is too thick (I.e. not enough water in the mix).

If you’re really worried about dust a small amount of linseed oil or casein can be added which works as a binder and makes it a bit more robust

I mean the general dust on the wall, no mater how much i sweep it down, apply water i always get dust coming off. With plaster you can cover this over. How do you do it with limewas, and what does a limewashed wall look like if that's not it

That doesn’t look nice. See, I said it. But it’s not mine so I really couldn’t give a ’s bottom and asking the internet for any aesthetic validation is a fools errand anyway. I doubt everyone here would be happy with some of my decor. Someone will be able to cover it up later if they want to, or leave it the way it is, either way no harm done to the building really.
