When is exposed internal stone wall acceptable?

It looks like we are wanting the picture I uploaded, please tell me this is an acceptable method for internal walls on old house? And would you do all for walls in this method?

The linewash method looks like plastering while keeping the outlines of the stones.

From that photo I’d say that wall isn’t lime washed, it’s just been repointed with a lime mortar and then the joints not fully brushed back

An historically correct way of finishing a stonewall, usually externally, to create a flush surface when jagged stones were used. A step away from a full render coat..

What @Kearn says, absolutely acceptable and the process of doing it will eliminate most of the causes of dust from old mortar on your existing wall and also leave a flat finish where dust has few surfaces to congregate on

I quite like an exposed masonary wall, partly because of the tactile connection to the people that built it. However I'm not a fan of exposed masonary with cement pointing. I really find the grey quite depressing, especially because it could have been a much more pleasing lime mortar. Pretty common in my area to see exposed limestone walls with cement, not the prettiest combination.

@Zebra i like that wall, did you seal the bricks in or just mortar between the bricks? I am concerned about the dust, i can't seem to get the stone face to not be dusty.

I didn't seal with anything. I just repointed where it needed it.
Yes I suppose it collects dust like anywhere else - I tend to run the brush over at least the lower part when I sweep the stairs, if I think of it - but it doesn't emit dust....

As my earlier post suggests I am largely ambivalent about the topic but - internally exposed stonework does make an excellent back-scratcher for those stubborn and hard to get to itches.

, think might seal to deal. Anyway we are going to try it on the stairs and see what we think, can always just plaster over the top if we don't like it.

I heard, though I haven't tried it, that wallpaper paste makes a transparent, breathable way of sealing a wall from being dusty.
