Which Lime Plaster To Use

You guys have been unbelievably helpful so far. We’ve now decided the only budget friendly option is to lime plaster ourselves. We’ve hacked off all 70’s detritus and now need to decide on the best product to use.

Ty-Mwyr seem to have an excellent range, and I like the idea of the premixed bags but is this a foolish option in terms of cost?

Imagining 2 or 3 coats, but happy for a more ‘rustic’ finish. Will insert plywood boards to plaster down to before attaching skirting. Ceiling will be boarded with gypsum.

Which product do you favour for interior walls? I’m going round in circles!

Photos for reference. C1700, flagstone floor and all walls seen are exterior single skin, except the red brick, which we will probably finish with regular plaster (someone suggested one-coat for a lime plaster look).

Depends what you’re trying to achieve on the walls thermally and any other considerations that impact thickness. Cable behind conduit needing to be hidden for example or window returns/architrave…

My approach for solid brick here has gone two ways:
1 - to get a deeper plaster and a smigeon of warmth, I use Ty Mwar pre bagged fine hemp as a base, then top coat over. The hemp can go on quite thick due to its resistance to cracking as it dries. I also top coat while it’s green so it saves some waiting time for carbonation and makes tending the top coat less arduous.
2 - use Eden Hotlime paternoster 4mm. Due to the aggregate size, there’s a reasonable resistance to cracking through shrinkage and you can apply in twonpasses, but at the same time to give 8-10mm. It’s a quick easy option, suggested with 10mm plastic mesh between the two coats, although I only use the mesh at joints of boards or edges. You may need a touch more tending without mesh. With the aggregate size you can play with your desired finish - I have happily troweled up supper smooth, but it was hard work and can be easily overworked. Alternatively, much quicker na smite forgiving to sponge finish. Also this helps with the application of line wash/distemper compared to a smooth surface.

Presuming you’re not next door to Ty Mwar, then you’re paying for a pallet anyway, so source is irrelevant.

I don’t like the pricing at Ty Mwar and their pre mix is in plastic bags which can be damaged.

Eden ship in plastic tubs, which are also really useful to keep for painting/limewashing. And means you can always have a tub to hand sealed airtight…

Your sensible alternative for the amount you have to do, is get ton dumpy bags premixed. It saves a fortune. As long as you have somewhere to keep it off road that a pallet truck can get to, then just twist up the plastic bag after shovelling out what you need and knocking up.

One coat isn’t cheap, you may find it’s easier just to use the Paternoster all round in one pass.

No help, but just to say...what a beautiful floor and cupboard
