Window surround restoration

Hacked and chipped 12 builders bags of cement and plaster off as far back as the original lime on my most recent window restoration. Chamfered reveals in surprisingly very good condition for once! Wooden pegs in situ assumed to have been there for panelling? Anyone else have any idea on these?

Wooden pegs in stone? I would be nervous of them - that's how stone has been split and quarried for millennia.

Looking at it from a historical context this is in what was the main showy off room of the house and has reeded panelling, stop chamfered beams and carved detail to fire surround so to have left pegs used for the extraction of stone visible isn't likely I don't think ? Especialy when they went to the effort of chamfering, adding stepped details etc? A mystery.

The huge peg looks to be a fairly recent probably to fill a gap, the other smaller ones are superficial and only go in an inch or so

If theres no reason to keep them then best to take them out and fill with a suitable material. The larger pegs or pieces of wood may have been used to allow other kit such as curtain rails et al to be fixed but these too should perhaps be removed if theres any risk of damp/moisture penetration.
