Derbyshire County Council (just over the border) have a good "how to" guide:

and you may find that contacting their conservation staff, (or indeed your local conservation officer) might produce results - even if they can't make recommendations, they may be able to cough at the right moment while you read the "roofers" section of the phone book to them...

I have just had my roof replaced by a cowboy. The first thing I would ask is can he get replacemennt slates?, mine couldn't be bothered and wrecked my pigsty roof in ripping off 60 slates, because he re-laid the roof to 8 courses instead of 7. One point I have seen is that the ends of the laths when butted up against each other and nailed, seem to be the first point of failure. I insisted that a 6" piece of lathe is nailed on the rafter to support the joint.
