The ongoing battle with our main bedroom continues, more work to the parapets may hopefully mean less mould and water staining in our front bedroom, never buying a house with parapets again!!! I am at the stage where things are dry..er and I can redecorate to cover water staining, currently a mix of Earthborn clay paint and limewash. In my wisdom I've purchased Zinsser Grade 1 thinking it would be the way to go but now I've discovered it's solvent albeit low VOC apparently, the thought of cleaning up rollers with white spirit is very unappealing but my main worry is breathability in a wall where I'm not sure if we'll still get damp/mould, I know Zinsser say it's breathable but surely less since it contains solvent. Should I or shouldn't I? Has anyone used this product? Any thoughts, experiences would be very welcome.

I have never used this new version, hopefully someone has. Note: It contains a biocide.
FYI solvent type does not necessarily relate to any cured film characteristics. It's not low solvent, at c. 25% it's 'low solvent' with respect to EU legislation, ie less than 35%. ('Solvent free' at 3%, according to legislation is still 3% above solvent free, which most non legal bods would of expected to be closer to 0%.)
All the Zinsser stain blockers are simply very high opacity paints. As the largest US refiner of shellac their flagship product was BIN shellac stain blocker, however this had up to 50% solvent and so not classed as 'low VOC'.
I would ask them what their SD value is as this is the most common reported permeability value (although who knows how much you can trust them)
I wouldn't imagine any stain blocker being super breathable as to block stain you either need a lot of binder or a lot of pigment.
Also depends whether you have hygroscopic salts or not, they can make any paint bubble.

thank you Toby v helpful, my gut feeling is not to use it, it's in a bedroom so any kind of VOC is not sitting very comfortably with me, my husband wont like the biocide either even though they don't seem to mention it on the tin, mind you he's not the one that has cleaned black mould off the walls several times! Think probably I should just go with limewash since actually that covers water staining much better than the claypaint, it's just not that great to wipe down, yep this is not the first or second time I have redecorated this room, I might use the Zinsser in the bathroom however where it's plasterboard central!

Very hard to tell, companies constantly change their fornulations, it's often difficult to keep up. A previous formulation may have been great whilst the new one not so much. Often you will have to experiment.
thanks again Toby and a Twig, I should have thought of doing a search, seems I am not the only one concerned with the breathability. Am going to go with Cornerstone Lime paint, mixes up from dry like limewash will be interesting to see any difference in coverage abilities etc.
