My project to decorate my hall in a Victorian polychromatic scheme is grinding on very slowly.
After trying out five different shades of red for my hall I think I have finally hit on the right one: Fired Earth Madder Red, possibly with Surpar Red below the painted on dado, although I am tempted to use a violet.
The trial scheme for my door architrave, which will help fix the palette for my polychrome cornice currently contains nine different colours and shades but I am still not happy with it. I am making progress in getting the colours to harmonise, but there needs to be the right tonal contrast as well. Thus a red and a green which look well together cannot effectively be juxtaposed if their tonal values are too similar. One colour needs to be lightened or darkened or a lighter or darker line needs to be introduced between them. On the flat members I am trying two shades of green, buff and a slightly darker red than the walls. Thinking of gold for the bead, a very dark red in the quirk of the ogee and blue, red, green and cream in the egg and dart decoration on the ogee itself. Thinking also of a greek key pattern in red over a buff background on the door stop.
