The usual annual dilemma has come round again. We have been with NFU since we bought the house in 2009 and, at that time, the annual premium was around £400. It has increased gradually over the years and this year is sitting at £1,574. I have been able to peg back a few of the increases but enough is now enough. I realise that NFU are one of the long term thatched house insurers that literally got their fingers burned with the advent of the wood burner.
I have looked at alternative insurers before but their onerous obligation were not really attainable, certainly not for the premium saving involved. Yesterday I was called by Lloyd Whyte who had quoted before and they asked if I would be interested in quoting again. I said yes and by last night I had their quotation. There are certain facts about the house that need to be corrected and could therefore have an impact on the premium, however, both NFU and Lloyd Whyte are now quoting on the same latest rebuild cost of £464,000. Lloyd Whyte's quote from AXA Insurance including IPT is as follows:
£866 with an excess of £550.
£764 with an excess of £1,050
£604 if we make a declaration that we won't use the wood burner. Not sure which excess attaches with this option.
My mentality, and that of many people, was that NFU will really look after you if a major loss occurs. I still think that is still the case, however, the premium differences are noq too tempting. Does anyone have experience of Lloyd Whyte and AXA Insurance when it comes to listed house insurance, particularly thatched?
Thanks
