I helped a neighbour move some furniture yesterday. In the course of this work, I commented on the wonderful condition of her large hall floor. It was just 6" reds and blues, but was a sizeable area and in excellent condition - possibly a reason for this were the three steps up from the pavement which meant that it was well-drained. I have a similar floor (much smaller) in my house but the reds in particular are in poor condition due to dampness, which I intend to fix soon.
She said the house was 1870-ish and in a conservation area but unlisted, and then surprised me by saying "the tiles are in the garden too", pointing to a large patio (probably about 6 m sq) of the same tiles.
We also discussed her windows - the CO has turned down her proposal for uPVC and wants softwood like the old ones. I pointed out the wavy glass in most of the panes and emphasised that this is historic - she was totally unaware of that.
I'd like to recommend her house for listing but I guess she would guess it was me who did it!
