A few houses I've lived in of a similar age have all had very dark floorboards hidden beneath the carpets.
It this just a colour they've gone with age or with the effects of underlay, or is there a particular stain that was popular in the early 1900's that was applied to give them this colour?
Thinking about cleaning up the floorboards rather than re-carpeting, but don't really want to go for a light freshly-sanded look..
