Hi all,
I am about to get the floorboards replaced in my back bedroom in my Victorian terraced house (in the rear annexe, above the kitchen). Since taking up the old laminate flooring I noticed that there's often a smell of stale cigarettes in the room from the old lady who lives next door. Unfortunately, she is quite the cigarette enthusiast!
I could sometimes smell it before the laminate flooring was taken up, but it's definitely worse now, so I'm pretty sure it must be coming up through the floor as the ceiling is quite well sealed. I will be putting new laminate down, but while I've got the floor up I'd like to try to do a bit more to stop this happening.
I was thinking of asking my builder to try his best to seal the wall after taking up the floorboards, and I assume a lot of the smoke might be getting in via gaps where the joists go into the party wall.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way of going about this? The party wall is brick, so I was thinking maybe a layer of plaster should so the trick on the wall.
In terms of filling the gaps around the joists, a lot of people online seem to suggest expanding foam, but I have a feeling I've read that this can trap moisture in the wood and cause rot - the last thing I want to risk! Am I right in thinking this?
If so, does anyone have any suggestions for how best to do this without risking rotten joists? Could plaster be used to seal these holes too?
Thanks!
