we have recently bought a semi-detached farmhouse(approx 1855) in monmouthshire. We have just finished stripping the woodchip off all the rooms, but revealed a mixture of cracked and crumbling surfaces underneath. The main room walls consist of lime plaster, which is very sandy and damaged in areas, new plaster up to 1 metre high over the tanking and some small areas of concrete. We are unsure how to progress as our funds are limited and we really don't want to have to hack all the plaster of all the walls. We were told not to use gypsum plaster over the lime as it dries too quickly, but I did not think lime plaster could be applied over new plaster? Ideally we would like the walls to be plastered(roughly, we don't want a smooth flawless finish)and then painted, we are not keen to use lining paper as has been suggested, as we assume this will just create more problems in not letting the walls breathe. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
