Thats fair comment, but your refering to a 20th century work. If you want accuracy look at 18th 19th century works, after all this is the period that we are talking about.
A dovetailed meeting rail does not need to be pinned. Look at 18th century drawer fronts for instance they are not pinned, the only means of a dovetailed meeting rail failing is laterally, but this would be checked by the pulley styles.
