Clothes Airer
Hi
I am keen to buy a Victorian clothes airer to hang above our Aga.
I just wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction. Have searched high and low on the internet but cannot find anyone specialising in antique airers. All I can find is hideous repros.
If you can help I would be most grateful
thanks
Chris

Re: Clothes Airer
Can't help, I'm afraid, but would urge you to continue to search: we had one over our Aga years ago, and it dried washloads of clothes faster than the machine could turn them out. Definitely the very best system known to man.
Re: Clothes Airer
John Lewis sell the classic wooden and cast iron clothes airer that hangs from the ceiling by a pulley, if that's the one you were thinking of.

Hello
You still see the cast iron parts and the pulleys at car bott sales here in Devon. I bought 2 for 50p last week!
If not eBay has loads or original ones.

Re: Clothes Airer
Once you've got the metal bits and the pulleys, you will have to obtain the wooden rails. Don't skimp on these - they should have rounded profiles so that the washing can be slid on and off easily, and they should be as substantial as possible. It is surprising how heavy a wet double-sheet can be, and thin rails will sag and bow under the strain.

Hi,
Just noticed your request for a Victorian Clothes Airer. We have one, not the type you hoist to the ceiling, but with slats that pull out and slip horizontally into a holder so it looks like a parasol. Please email gordon.pettitt@ntlworld.com if you're interested, I'll send a photo!
Regards, Gordon
